Fun Friday
May comes in like a lion
Since we had almost no snow or even cold weather in the normal winter months, it was surprising to get our biggest snowstorm of 2026 this week. We desperately needed the moisture, even though most of the snow apparently missed some of the key collection basins in the states. It was the biggest snowstorm May snowstorm since 2003. My trees bent, but did not break, though many around town were not so lucky.
On the sports scene, the Avs lead their second round series 2-0, in their pursuit of the Stanley Cup. This may be a amazing hockey year in Colorado, after DU’s collegiate title.
The Nuggets are going fishin’ - as the Ernie/Shaq/Kenny/Charles crew like to say when teams lose out in the playoffs. As I read the assessments of the Nuggets future, they are spending a lot of money on their key players, and the NBA financial penalties for going above the salary cap are quite severe. While Nuggets ownership could well afford more spending, and paying luxury taxes, they aren’t likely to do that. Which means finding some cheaper supporting players, and/or making internal improvements. And having the good luck to stay healthy.
Tidbits:
In my Wednesday post about the need for mundane urban spaces as infrastructure for fancy uses, I didn’t emphasize enough that local governments have zoning/regulatory control over these spaces. That gives them some real power, as higher levels of government do or do not regulate these activities carefully. American federalism has endless, interesting facets.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) made their visit to Denver this week, to see if we should host the 2028 convention here, at a price tag in the $75 million range. We are one of five options; I think they will choose Atlanta, given Georgia’s important swing status, but some think we have a good chance, to relive the glory days of 2008.
